The latest tree to fall in the Willamette Valley’s soggy windstorm came perilously close to seriously injuring a Wilsonville woman: It fell directly onto her bed.

Early Monday morning, Jane Gerrard heard the tree slam into her home. She told KGW, “It was very dark in the room and I kind of look around me and I’m like, oh my gosh, there is a tree over me in my bed,” Gerrard said. “I saw this little gap … and I thought, well I think I could climb out of that.”

Gerrard did manage to wriggle through the space. She drove herself to the hospital, to learn she had a broken vertebrae. Her son and two dogs who were in the home escaped unharmed.

But the corner bedroom is destroyed. Said Edward Laskaris of Tualatin Valley Fire and Rescue: “It’s amazing that anybody got out of that bedroom without major injuries.”
