Oregon’s tribal children are faring far worse in school than we thought. The Oregonian reports a new study reveals that one out of every three students enrolled in a Native American tribe miss so much school they can’t stay at grade level. Tribal children were less likely to graduate from high school within five years, only forty percent were at grade level in math, and only about half of them were at grade level for reading.
Previous studies looked at all the state’s Native American children, not just the five percent of them enrolled in a tribe. Those studies found non-tribal Native American children fare much better, making these results a sobering surprise for both educators and tribal leaders. The Spirit Mountain Community Fund paid for the study, which was conducted by ECONorthwest.
