Nearly one-third of Oregon’s prison inmates are sex offenders and about half suffer from some form of mental illness. That information comes from a new report from the Department of Corrections. The report also states that just seven percent of inmates belong to a gang. One reason for the high number of sex offenders is that Oregon has very long sentences for sex crimes. The Salem Statesman Journal reports that more than 70 percent of all inmates have some pattern of substance abuse.
