As the springtime approaches, this May promises sunshine—and more importantly—a spotlight for the AAPI community all over the country! Here in Portland, there are a myriad of ways to show support.

For music lovers (probably you if you’re reading a PRP blog post!), the city is filled to the brim with talented artists.

Joe Kye is a violinist and vocalist who has launched tons of amazing projects worth checking out. His group, Joe Kye & the Givers, fuses sounds from Portland’s best and brightest musicians. Kye is also the founder of a children’s music project, which “introduces families to his story of hope and joy with an electro-pop sound, embracing the creative power of looping with songs inspired by the audience.” In 2022, Kye launched Tiger Tiger PDX and features Asian American, Native Hawaiian, and Pacific Islander artists, performers, and chefs. Kye is also playing a show on May 19th at the Patricia Reser Center for the Arts!

If you’re into styles of soul, funk, and R & B, Annie Dang is the way to go. She got her start here in Portland’s local music scene and has since released a kickin’ EP titled Shake! Introducing Annie Dang. Her vintage vibe and guitar chops are unbeatable.

June Magnolia, who released her first record titled Sankras in 2017, is a chamber-folk superstar. She has two released albums, and was a finalist in the Tiny Desk Concert of 2021! She was also featured in Joe Kye’s Tiger Tiger PDX festival (as mentioned above.) Aside from her music, Magnolia’s songs often feature music videos which boast incredible visuals that truly take the audience on a ride.

In addition to music, there are some great AAPI organizations and businesses to support here in Portland.

The Asian Pacific American Chamber of Commerce’s goal is to support its members in networking their products, services, and businesses. The organization is based in both the Portland and SW Washington area.

The Lan Su Chinese Garden is a long-time Portland gem and features both beautiful views and attractions. The Tao of Tea serves snacks and beverages, as well as outdoor seating for views of the garden, and The Garden Shop sells gifts of all types. The Garden is located on NW Everett Street and is truly a must-visit for anyone in the city.

However you spend time in PDX this May, remember to support your AAPI community!
