Drivers on Barbur Boulevard will notice a new addition tomorrow morning: bicycle warning signals. Bikers on Barbur have a dedicated bike lane except at the Newbury Street and Vermont Street bridges, where they get dumped into traffic. Bike Portland reports the new warning signals will automatically trigger when riders roll over sensors in the road.

ODOT is overhauling both bridges. Despite pleas from the bike community to build actual bike infrastructure on the bridges, ODOT and city Commissioner Steve Novick went with the signs for now; the current project is to shore up the bridges, and not substantially change them.
