We’ll know by February 20th whether an initiative to turn the Portland Water Bureau into a separate nonprofit will appear on the May ballot. The Oregonian reports backers submitted 50,000 signatures yesterday, well above the 30,000 they need. City workers will validate them over the next few weeks.
The Portland Public Water District proposal would take the Water Bureau from direct city control. An independent board would manage water and sewer services instead.
