Wal-Mart is going organic. Well not entirely. But as the world’s largest retailer and the largest single seller of food in the U.S. Wal-Mart is trying to secure its share of the growing trend of going pesticide and GMO free. Starting this month the retail giant is teaming up with Wild Oats to sell organic packaged food. It’s a huge expansion that Wal-Mart says its customers want. Their research showed that 91 percent of its shoppers would consider buying products from an affordable organic brand.
Locally, it’s chief rivals, Whole Foods and New Seasons better take note because a lot of money is at stake here. According to the Washington-based Organic Trade Association, organic food and other products generated sales of $31.5 billion in the U.S. in 2012, up over 10% from the year before.
