Olympic snowboarder Sage Kotsenburg nailed the first American gold medal at Sochi with a trick no one had ever seen before in official competition–and that he’d never even done before. The Idaho native performed a move officially called a “1620 Japan Air Mute Grab”–translated from the snowboard-ese, that means he launched into the air, rotated four and a half times, grabbed the back of his board and flexed his legs behind his back.

The Idaho Statesman reports Kotsenburg didn’t know he was going to do the move until just before he left the starting gate. He says, “It’s kind of what I’m all about.”
