The Port of Portland has formally withdrawn its request for Portland to annex West Hayden Island. In a statement issued yesterday, it said the city’s requirements made the annexation too expensive. The Port had planned to develop 300 of the site’s 1,000 acres into marine facilities. KGW reports Portland’s Audubon Society has fought the Port’s plans since it purchased the property a decade ago, and calls the withdrawal a win for the community.
