If you wonder why people are lining Beaverton-Hillsdale Highway Monday around noon, it’s part of a memorial to a young Beaverton man killed in Afghanistan earlier this month. Army Specialist John A. Pelham, who graduated from Sunset High School in 2010, died on February 12th. The Portland Tribune reports Zach Gallinger-Long, chairman of the Oregon Military Families Task Force, and Amber Gilley, whose brother also died in Afghanistan, are organizing the event. They’re hoping anyone who wishes to honor the young soldier’s life will assemble at the intersection of Southwest 99th and Beaverton-Hillsdale Highway. They’re hoping the line of people and flags will extend all the way down to Highway 217.
