Open enrollment for people on Medicare runs until December 7.  But all the news about the Affordable Care Act and new state health exchanges, has some people confused.

The six-week window between October 15 and December 7 is the only time most Medicare beneficiaries can change their health insurance company or prescription drug coverage for 2014.

But Jeff Underwood of UnitedHealthcare says all the changes have flustered some people.[hr]

“The state-based exchange does not impact Medicare in one way,” Underwood said.

“I know there’s a lot of confusion around that. So with all the information out there about the state based exchanges and people wondering if that’s how I need to enroll in my Medicare plans or look for information and that’s not,” he explained.

Medicare beneficiaries should enroll just like they did last year, that is by either talking to their insurance broker, calling Medicare directly or getting a family member or friend to help.

Things to check include making sure that your doctor or hospital is still included in the insurance company’s network, and to make sure the the plan fits with your budget.
