defunkt theatre is a nationally recognized, non-profit ensemble theatre company dedicated to creating innovative productions that challenge conventional ideals of society and theatre at a reasonable price. They offer fresh and relevant perspectives on issues of race, gender, and class. They strive to stretch the minds and comfort zones of the audience.

On September 8, members of the company and supporters gathered at Crush to celebrate the upcoming 15th season of performances. I was met at the door by the charming and talented staff of the theatre: Andrew Klaus-Vineyard (Associate Director), Lori Sue Hoffman (Executive Director), Sarah Armitage and Matthew Kern (Managing Director).  I learned that all the staff are volunteers for this small theatre company with big messages. The evening of celebration included a silent auction and entertainment provided by the talented, Pagan Holiday.

In The Forest, She Grew Fangs

Summary:  Using the story of Little Red Riding Hood, it looks at bullying using the premise of that fairytale to share insights about this ever-growing issue facing young people of today.

Summary:  A single, gay woman decides to have a baby and discovers that the child she carries will likely enter the world with genetic challenges.

The Undiscovered Country
May 8- June 13, 2015

Summary:  Based in Portland, this play reveals the uncharted terrain of tales of addiction.
