African Road is driven by Changemaker partners & their local communities in Burundi, Kenya, Rwanda, the DRC & Tanzania. The work of this organization is built on a foundation of strong relationships and meaningful mentorship. And is not charity or aid; the work is to empower. African Road believes that collaboration, integrity and sustainability are vital to positive change in East Africa.

Co-Founder and Executive Director of African Road, Kelly Bean, joined us in the PRP studio for our latest episode of Community Voices – our platform where we give spotlight to the amazing work of our local nonprofit community – and shared the inspiration behind AR’s mission “to build long term relationships with local Changemakers, for the life, health and growth of communities in East Africa”.

At the heart of this organization is an understanding of humanity and resilience. In many of the East African communities that African Road partners with, the most vulnerable people are youth and women. Local Changemakers and African Road are working together to restore dignity and opportunity….and perhaps the occasional soccer game.

AR is having its first ever Festival Fun Run – this family and community-oriented event will be held Sunday, September 29th at Champoeg State Park. The day starts with a 5K run (or walk, no pressure) at 11:00am. The Festival will begin at the 5K finish-line, leading into an afternoon of activity and delight. Tour the signature African Road Learning Stations, peruse the Marketplace, browse and bid on exciting Silent Auction packages, enjoy live music and entertainment, play lawn games, enjoy food and drink, and perhaps even have a chance to play soccer with Changemaker Steven Turikunkiko (pictured above with Kelly) who will be present for the day.

If a run/walk isn’t your thing, consider purchasing a raffle ticket (only 300 will be sold) for their Learning Trip Raffle. The lucky winner will experience the beautiful green hills of Rwanda, warm culture of Tanzania, drumming and dancing and stories that will both change AND encourage you. You will witness positive change and hope at work while spending 8 days in Rwanda and six days in Tanzania.
