If you’re a same sex couple in a Washington civil union, you’re getting married–whether you want to or not. Now that same sex marriage is legal in the state, official are planning to convert all existing Washington-registered civil unions into marriages by June 30th, unless the couples either get married themselves or dissolve the union beforehand.

The Seattle Times reports it’s the final piece of the new marriage laws, but it’s one many couples may not be aware of–and some may not welcome. For instance, some couples may have split up and married other partners without first dissolving the original civil union. When this final step kicks in, they may find themselves illegally married to two people.

The state is planning to start notifying couples in civil unions of the change starting next month. It affects some 6,500 relationships registered in Washington.
