The Colonies have been invaded once again. Another British musician from the West Midlands of the U.K. has landed in Portland and this time has established he and his family at the Kingsland Kitchen, one of the Rose City’s more unique food carts.
Inspired by the food cart scene in both London and Portland, English native Chris Payne and his wife Holli are serving their twist on the culinary culture of the midlands of the UK. Located on SW Oak at 5th, the Kingsland Kitchen’s menu draws from the varied food styles of the Caribbean, India, Italy and of course, England.
Acting on a dream, the Paynes moved to Holli’s home town of Portland in 2014 after time spent in both Hollywood, CA, and the Midlands of England. They arrived in Portland with the goal of opening a food cart. After a year of preparation, Chris and Holli began serving their sandwiches, including weekly specials, in February of 2015 during the ‘lunch hours’ of 11 AM to 3 PM, Monday through Friday.
Their menu includes sandwiches that are filled with such things as; Guinness-braised beef with slaw, house pickles and a smokey salsa roja; Mumbai-spiced chicken with crispy Poppadum, raita, pickled cucumber and tomato salsa; Jerk chicken with spicy pineapple salsa, slaw, and spiced mayo. Each of the sandwiches is served on a French roll. All of the food at Kingsland Kitchen is prepared from scratch with an emphasis on locally sourced and organic ingredients and bread that is delivered fresh each day.
Desserts are also available. Dark chocolate cupcakes filled with a strawberry coulis and topped with vanilla butter cream frosting as well as Millionaire’s short bread can be had.
