The parents of a Portland bicyclist killed in a 2012 accident downtown have settled their wrongful death suit against a truck company. Quality Custom Distribution Services and its parent company, Golden State Foods agreed to pay the parents of Kathryn Rickson $700,000. A Quality Custom Distribution driver turned in front of Rickson at Southwest Third and Madison in May of 2012; she struck its front bumper and was run over.
While police declined to arrest the driver and the district attorney chose not to prosecute, Rickson’s parents told The Oregonian they wanted to vindicate their daughter. She was wearing a helmet, had proper head and taillights, and by Oregon law had the right of way. The two parties agreed to a settlement after the parents’ attorneys showed that the driver should have seen her.
