The last time The Get Ahead‘s Nathan Earle and Juliet Howard paid us a visit (8/10/16), the internet gremlins decided to play a game and take away our online streaming. Since then, Portland Radio Project moved to its new location, and is now on the radio twenty-four hours a day at 99.1FM as well as online. Even though we had a great time improvising the show using Facebook Live Stream, we wanted to bring them back to The Portland Playlist for their full Drop-In Session.

We listened to a couple of their influences, Son Little’s The River; Songhey Blues’ IrgandaSam Cooke’s A Change is Gonna Come; and Daniel Norgren’s Are we Running Out of Love. Both Son Little and Daniel Norgren are Pickathon discoveries of theirs and Little is producing The Get Ahead’s new album with a hoped-for release early next year. We also heard Little DevilNo One Even Knows, and Earn It, off The Get Ahead’s 2015 release, “Volcano.”

The live performance portion of the evening included “Black Muscadine” (from Nathan’s solo project), “Catch Feelings,” and “Face Up.” You can watch the live stream video here. Whether they perform as a duo, as Nathan Earle in his solo project, or with the full band as The Get Ahead, theirs is music that is soul-filled, and more often than not gets you moving to the beat on the dance floor. Nathan and Juliet’s harmonies are delicious (and our talk in the studio often related to food), and their fun-filled performances exude passion.

The band has two special shows coming up that shouldn’t be missed, the Pray for Snow party at 10 Barrel Brewing on Saturday, November 19, and the Smith to Smithereen’s: A Tribute to 80’s College Rock, on November 20 at the Doug Fir. This event will showcase 21 Portland bands to raise money for p:ear‘s monthly giving club for a music mentoring program for homeless and transitional youth.
