Breathing – it’s something we generally take for granted.

But the organization Free to Breathe knows that this isn’t true for everyone. People with lung cancer know that their lungs – those amazing organs that make breathing so easy we forget about it – are very precious. That’s why Free to Breathe has the mission to double lung cancer survival rates by 2022.

The nonprofit is a partnership of healthcare professionals, researchers, survivors and their families, and advocates. They work to reduce lung cancer fatalities by funding research, encouraging lung cancer patients participating in clinical trials, and building a supportive lung cancer community. Part of their mission is also to raise awareness that lung cancer is not just a smoker’s disease – anyone can get it.

Free to Breathe raises funds for research through a variety of annual fundraisers. Our Portland branch is hosting one soon.  On Aug. 21 at the Eastbank Esplanade the organization will hold its annual 5K walk/run. Registration closes Aug. 17, so get a spot in the race while you can.

This week at Portland Radio Project we featured Free to Breathe as part of our award-winning Community Voices series. You can listen below to interviews held with key members of the organization:
