Earlier this month, Anne of No Dudes Radio Hour! had the double honor of guest-hosting NW Honky Tonk in Jamie’s absence and welcoming back Flyover States—Portland’s powerhouse folk trio featuring Jessica Rose Patton, Steven Patton, and Aaron Elliott—to the PRP studio. Fresh off the release of their third album, True North, the trio arrived with a guitar, upright bass, and some of the sweetest live harmonies ever broadcast—plus plenty of heartwarming stories in tow.

Anne shares a brief but fun history with the band, having first met Steven and Aaron in 2010 when they rolled into Portland as part of a four-piece funk band from Omaha, Nebraska. After being completely smitten by Flyover States’ intricate harmonies at last year’s Portland Folk Festival, she was thrilled to meet Jessica and dive into the group’s musical evolution.

Steven and Aaron’s sound took a transformative turn in 2017 when they joined forces with Jessica—a Hawaii-born singer/songwriter, teacher, and multi-instrumentalist who’d been performing and recording since 2003. Jessica brought luminous vocals and deep emotional storytelling into the mix, creating something entirely fresh, intentional, and resonant. She and Steven later married and now have a young daughter, adding another beautiful layer of heart and lived experience to their music.

Their new album, True North, captures the trio’s personal and musical growth with lush harmonies and raw, honest lyrics. It explores themes like new parenthood, marriage, healing, and identity—all with depth and grace.
