Negotiators for the District Council of Trade Unions are sitting down Thursday with the seven unions it represents to see why membership soundly rejected a new contract with the City of Portland. The coalition covers more than 1,600 city workers, from janitors to the folks who cleared roadways during the recent snow storms.
Willamette Week reports chief negotiator Rob Wheaton was stunned by the vote. Nearly 60 percent of the 1100 or so voting members said no to the agreement, which was in the works for more than a year. The major sticking point was a clause letting the city contract out jobs the unions say should go to their members.
