Amplifying Pacific Northwest Women Singer/Songwriters
The first in a monthly series from Portland Radio Project along with Portland’s premier acoustic and singer/songwriter listening room, Artichoke Music. For this first show, Portland Radio Project hands the microphone over to three female singer/songwriters emerging in the Pacific Northwest, for a rich evening of independent voices and powerful stories. 

 

THE LINEUP:

Nyah 
Nyah is an 18-year-old singer/songwriter from the Oregon Coast.  She’s basically been singing since she was born.  Her mom tells the story of Nyah being just hours old when the staff had to kick her out of the hospital nursery, since her big voice kept waking up the other babies.  Nyah started singing on stage through musical theatre at age 7 and has participated in several community theatre shows since.  She is a National Anthem singer, starting at age 10, with performances at numerous events, including for the University of Oregon, the Portland Trail Blazers, and the Seattle Seahawks.

Nyah joined L.A.- based InRage Entertainment when she was 13 years old.  Her debut EP “Disconnected”, which released in 2020, features original songs, including “Empty Spaces”, which is also her first music video, with many scenes filmed in her hometown in Oregon.  Nyah’s second music video for her original song “Trigger” takes on the topic of suicide awareness and prevention and released in 2021.  Nyah’s third music video for her original song “Flowers On My Grave”, brought her back to Oregon, featuring the landscape of Detroit Lake, and released in spring 2022.

Earlier this month, Nyah went back to Los Angeles, to view a clip of her music video “Trigger” on an electronic billboard in Hollywood.  While she was in California, she recorded new music with Grammy-nominated producer Bruce “Automatic” Vanderveer.   Look for new, original music in the coming months!

 

Ronnie Carrier 
Once described as Sarah McLachlan meets Nirvana, Portland-based folk-rock songwriter Ronnie Carrier’s musical world is like a haunted house with friendly ghosts. Each room is a gothic, fantastical observation on life’s anxieties and addictions, risks and rewards, loves and loses. Infusing haunting vocals and Lewis-Carroll-like lyrics, Ronnie Carrier’s musical narratives are as catchy as they are clever.

Her music draws influences from pop to choral to blues to country and beyond, as showcased on her two albums, EP, and singles. With a warm stage presence and a touch of humor, Ronnie’s talent shines through her performances and her music has something for everyone. Last, but not least, Ronnie Carrier is an expert at the mouth trumpet.

 

Erin Westfall
Singer-songwriter Erin Westfall bought her first guitar, a six-string Samick acoustic, for $25 from an antique shop when she was in high school. She taught herself enough chords to play her favorite pop songs, and eventually began writing originals, compiling them into a demo album
for her senior project.

This adventure in music composition led to her studying contemporary music at Western Oregon University, where she departed from her classical music background and became smitten with jazz, soul, Brazilian and popular music. In 2019, Erin and her band released their debut EP, Light. Since then, she has continued to perform and teach in the Willamette Valley.

Influenced by singer-songwriters Sara Bareilles, Joni Mitchell and Margaret Glaspy, Erin continues to write new music that draws from personal experiences of heartbreak, growing into oneself, and her childhood in California. Her love of Laurel-Canyon classics, 1960’s chart-toppers, and current pop hits blends together as she weaves new stories with voice and guitar.
