From Patrick Meigs – the host of The Mixtape

Five Letter Word – a local band whose blend of harmonies and musicianship is simply incredible. This is going to be a great show!

From the Five Letter Word website: “Mix three singer-songwriters, several stringed instruments, and a variety of percussive techniques, and you get Five Letter Word. This Portland, OR-based trio of powerful women includes Leigh Jones (guitar, percussion), Clara Baker (fiddle, guitar, banjo) and Audra Nemir (bass), blending their signature harmonies into songs from folk to bluegrass to blues and beyond. Recent winners of the 2018 Northwest String Summit Band Competition, Five Letter Word takes inspiration from the harmonic tradition of groups like the Wailin’ Jennys, Dixie Chicks, and The Wood Brothers, and add their own special flair to create a sound that is “uniquely infectious” and a show that is “delightful, with a few unexpected twists.”

Two of five current members are originally from The Shoals region of northern Alabama and met as roommates at the University of Alabama, and the band strongly identifies with Alabama. The group also has roots in Richmond, Virginia.” They also now have roots in Portland, where Patterson Hood now lives. The last time they played here, it was a barn burner of a show!

Candace –  Candace is an incredible local Portland band. The last time I saw them play, they quite simply blew my mind!

“Candace infuses their music with a sense of mystery and brooding atmosphere. Psychedelic and shoegaze influences emerge throughout the catalogue: the atmospheric tones of early Verve, a droning pulse reminiscent of Loop. Some songs bounce gleefully forward with a pop sensibility, while some keep a cool distance and move with a language distinctly their own.”
