Last Friday The Cabin Project released their latest record, Unfolded to an eager crowd at Doug Fir Lounge. There is a lot of excitement and pressure that goes along with an album release so I appreciate the band stopping by to hang out the night before the show. From the word go I FullSizeRender (1)have loved the band’s blend of gut wrenching singer-songwriter honesty and anthemic orchestral production. The Cabin Project creates music that is inspiring and has density in both the lyrics and sonic quality. This week on the show I wanted to discuss the topic of women in music alongside digging into the making of Unfolded. Our PDX Spotlight Playlist included Ani Difranco, Sharon Van Etten, Tori Amos, Feist, and 5 unreleased songs from Unfolded. I was lucky enough to get an advanced copy of Unfolded the week of the show so we could play some unreleased tracks for the listeners. The album has a lot of stand out moments so it was hard to pick the songs for the playlist. We ended up playing the songs, November I Miss You, Where I Stand, Focus, Throw, and Chain.

During our interview we discussed some of the common issues and struggles that female musicians face on the road. Drummer, Zanny Geffel spoke about overcoming the preconceived ideas of an “All female band” and touring in a male dominated business. Singer, guitarist and keys player, Katie Sawicki expressed the importance of being true to your art and using that as a tool to overcome outdated thinking. Violist Rebekah Hanson also told us about gender perception in the classical music world and that it has even further to go than popular music. We celebrated the female artists who paved the way and inspired generations of songwriters. It’s important to reflect on the legends as well as finding new artists that are continuing on in that same spirit.  FullSizeRender (2)

Our conversation wasn’t just about heavy topics, we had plenty of laughs as the band was recalling the making of their new video, “Highways” and some funny behind the scenes stories. During the interview it was great to listen to the personality and creative dynamic of the ladies. They are all extremely passionate about their art and connecting with the listeners.
