There’s quite a sweet community in Portland that devotes itself to fiddling, western swing and country-styled sounds. As Saturday Joe and I discovered, there is not one cynical bone in the body of Aarun and Jonathan.
The Well-Swung Music of Aarun and Jonathan
Much of what these two fresh Portlanders, arriving from Denver and Arkansas respectively, told us, is that they learned to play at their momma and daddy’s knees.
Our conversation ran from the recent win Aarun added to her already decorated fiddling career, picking up the Oregon State Fiddle Championship title, to the great community the duo have bonded with at Landmark Saloon. Beginning with respect for the music that came before them, to cultivating the charm of this genre that crosses folk, bluegrass and western swing, their approach is fully authentic.
Coming as the Drop-In Session did on the heels of the earlier loss in the week of the great Merle Haggard, both artists reflected on his incredible contribution to our culture and to our musical heritage. WE are all big fans of the great Dale Watson as well. Here’s a great shot of our hero who was in deep mourning last week, over the loss of HIS hero..
