Among the shower of new albums released lately, a stand out is “All You Pretty Vandals” from Casey Neill and the Norway Rats. Decemberists’ Chris Funk produced the album with Neill. The album? Fully loaded with all sorts of star power and guesting musicians. Sounds like the Doug Fir show will be just like that. “Loads of surprises, guests and antics” are promised. I would recommend tickets in advance.

I can’t wait for the new George Jones Tribute Album. “Deer Lodge” is releasing next month. But meantime, we have 11 Portland bands covering the complete Beach Boys Smile. The great label Tender Loving Empire is throwing the release party for Portland Smiles Friday night. Promises to shed some beachy vibes on a wet Portland evening.
And more music picks for the w-end are here, courtesy of our friends at Oregon Music News.

Foodies
Saturday, Nov. 16: In 2013 The Northwest Food and Wine Festival will return as the definitive wine festival in Portland with a targeted half-day wine and food celebration created to present a rich rewarding experience for wine lovers and gourmet food enthusiasts. Held on Saturday at the Double Tree Hotel Exhibit Hall and Ballroom, the festival kicks off with the Big Grand Wine Tasting Event. Guests can expect a floor filled with more than 600 wines and 50 restaurants and gourmet food tastes which feature an incredible array of options for pairings. They will receive a wine glass and be able to navigate the floor, smelling, savoring and seeing the bounty of the Northwest, delighting in its offerings. Whether enjoying the raw oysters and wonderful seafood, chocolate with fresh strawberries or the one-on-one conversations with the restauranteurs involved, all will appreciate the epicurean atmosphere. Industry booths of gourmet food, wine and culinary accoutrements will introduce their brand or product to attendees. The festival also highlights spirits, beers, pates, lamb and all things good! Spirits, wines and some food may be purchased to be enjoyed later at home.
Theater
November: It’s not your high school production of the war horse “Our Town.” Because this production is in the hands of experimental performance group Liminal. A theater company like no other. Expect the piece to begin as it always does, on a bare stage, true to Thorntn Wilder’s script.
But then, as Liminal likes to do, music and all kinds of multi-media goodness gets layered in until…well. You will just have to go and see it.
