Who cooks with automotive parts? Authentic Detroit pizza makers that’s who. In the Fifties pizza chefs in Detroit rather than use the typical square Sicilian pizza pans, repurposed auto parts trays to bake their pizzas. Midwest Pizza Company also uses those same auto parts trays to bake their Detroit-style pizza.
The square auto parts pans used to bake Detroit-style pizza give the pie it’s unique caramelized crust. It’s topped with a special blend of cheeses and pepperoni and/or Italian sausage. Midwest Pizza imports their sausage from Ohio.
Midwest Pizza Company uses an eight-deck professional pizza oven to create both the Detroit-style and Chicago deep dish pizzas. They can bake eight extra-large Chicago-style pizzas or 24 Detroit-style pizzas at the same time. In fact, the cart was built around the oven.
Steve Morgan, proprietor of The Midwest Pizza Company, also serves an authentic, “dragged-through-the-garden” Chicago dog. The Red Hot beef hot dogs, the nuclear-green relish, the onions, the poppy-seed buns and the sport peppers are all imported from Chicago. A Detroit-style Coney dog is also available that comes smothered in Coney sauce, onions and cheddar cheese.
For homesick Midwesterners the Midwest Pizza Company has Ballreich’s potato chips, Faygo pop in the Rock & Rye and Orange flavors, Sprecher Root Beer and Cream Soda and Detroit’s own Vernors Ginger Ale to go along with your pizza.
The Midwest Pizza Company can be found in the Mississippi Marketplace food cart pod located at the corner of N Mississippi Ave and N Skidmore St, right next to Prost! where you can enjoy your pizza if you so choose. Midwest Pizza is open Tuesday and Wednesday 11:30 AM to 4:00 PM. Thursday through Saturday the hours are 11:30 AM to 8:00 PM.
Listen now as Steven Shomler and Ken Wilson discuss with Steve Morgan the intricacies and individual advantages of Chicago deep dish and Detroit-style pizza.
