In a town as cycle-centric as Portland, Güero is one food cart that has the pedal-gree to travel to the highest ranks of the very best food carts in PDX.

Alec Harry and Megan Sanchez came to Portland by way of Mexico and Vermont. While in Vermont they owned and operated a bicycle-based taco delivery service. While the tacos-by-bicycle endeavor was short-lived, Güero’s time in Portland has been an outstanding success.

Güero is decorated so it seems as though you’re at a small Mexican restaurant rather than in SE Portland. With covered outdoor seating, the setting and the food will allow you to feel as though you’ve somehow found a quiet spot near the beach overlooking the Sea of Cortez.

Güero offers “comida casera,” which translates to ‘home cooking.’ Specializing in hand-made tortas and tacos, the recipes are based upon Alec’s culinary experiences while he was living and traveling in Mexico.

The tortas offered on Güero’s menu include the Pollo Pibil. This torta contains Draper Valley chicken cooked in achiote with citrus and banana leaf. All of the tortas include charred-chili aioli, avocado, fresh onion, cilantro and lime, cabbage and Yucatán pickled onion.

When you visit Güero, you must try the carrot habanero salsa. That’s right. A salsa made from carrots and habanero peppers. This condiment not only lives up to the expectation of the amazing flavor and heat you’d expect, but exceeds it. A worthy addition to your culinary experience at Güero.

Güero’s original cart (actually an Airstream trailer) is located at SE 28th and Ankeny at Pod28. Hours are 11:30 to 8:00. Recently Güero opened a second location downtown at SW 10th and Alder. The downtown cart, Güero Tortoría, is open during lunchtime and serves only tortas.
