The Portland Playlist welcomed a merry band of music makers to the studio for a night of psychedelic sounds from the 60’s to today’s which encompassed Blues, Rock, and yes, some of that Psychedelia. Joining us in the studio were Ron Rogers, Deborah Giles, Don Campbell, Mark Bowden, and Chris Bond who make up Ron Rogers and The Wailing Wind. This isn’t their first rodeo for they are all accomplished musicians with other projects.

Ron is a singer-songwriter-guitarist who is well steeped in the solid songwriting traditions of rock, blues, and country but applies a strong working-class sensibility and rough-and-tumble imagery to his lyrical craft. “His are songs of protest, of pushing back against the establishment, of hard-working hands, and of making the best of a bad situation.” These themes couldn’t be more fitting for our current world affairs. His influences included some vintage finds; Sure ‘Nuff and Yes I Do by Captain Beefheart, 13th Floor Elevators’, You’re Gonna Miss Me, and the Yardbirds’, Happenings Ten Years Time Ago.

The band gave us exclusive rights to play three recorded tracks off their new, yet to be named, album; Back Into This Church, Ride on Baby, and Beaulaland. What followed was a live performance showcasing three and four part harmonies, great guitar riffs, and an easygoing camaraderie between them that makes you want more. You can see it for yourself when you come to their February 10th show at Hawthorne Theatre, 6 p.m.

Don’t be fooled by the “wailing” in their name, when they wail it is in the most pleasant way. Taken from Don Fischer’s song, “Wailing Wind,” Ron was given permission from Don to use it for his band’s name. They have a faithful following who come to all of their shows, often packing the house. We are excited for them to release the new album because it is guaranteed to please those fans and garner many more. We’re hoping it will increase their performance calendar so you’ll have more opportunities to see them, hint, hint, Ron.
