There were some sweet as honey harmonies in the studio Wednesday night from our guests, Stoneface Honey. Deciding to put her solo career aside, Angie Kopshy sought guidance from Charles Neal at Hip Stew Studios. He introduced her to guitarist Daniel Johnson. She then ran a Craigslist ad and Kate Austin answered. You only need to hear their harmonies to know this was a band in the making. Other members have come and gone but with the addition of Dan’s wife Shirley on drums, and Kate Harris on vocals and soon, bass, they have found the band that fits.

The first part of the show covered Angie’s music influences which included Abba’s SOS; Chicago’s Saturday in the Park; Cloudline by local group, Joseph; and All We Ever Knew by Head and the Heart. Abba is a band that Angie grew up listening to, and it is believed to be the album she was listening to in the picture of her child self featured on Stoneface’s new album, “Long Time Waiting.”

Her first concert was Chicago and they are a band that left a lasting impression for their size, horn section, and production. She admires Joseph for their amazing harmonies, and Cloudline is one that Stoneface Honey performs. All We Ever Knew is off the album, “Signs of Light,” and is one Kate Austin considers her most influential album, for their emotive lyrics and the emotional journey their music takes you on.
They launched a successful Kickstarter campaign to fund their new album, Long Time Waiting,” released this past November 4th at The Secret Society. It was engineered and produced at Hip Stew Studios and mastered by Dana White at Specialized Mastering. “The album incorporates strong influences from the entire band as Angie embraced a more collaborative approach and stepped out of her secret songwriting closet.”

We listened to a couple of the recorded tracks from the album, “History,” “Ferris Wheel,” and “Protest” before enjoying their live performance. Starting off with”Beguiled,” this is one they recently released a video of. The song is about forbidden love and is Angie’s “contribution to the gay rights movement.”

Next, they debuted the song “Help Me” which is the first song with contributions from the entire band. Finishing with the album’s title track, this one really showcases Angie and “the Kate’s” beautiful harmonies.

Stoneface Honey is a band that tackles sensitive world issues within an indie-pop sound. Their lighthearted beat can make you forget for a little while the seriousness of world affairs yet addresses them if you listen close.
