Studies from the National Cancer Institute have shown that about 70,000 young people (ages 15-39) are diagnosed with cancer each year in the United States. This accounts for about 5 percent of cancer diagnoses in the United States.

The Hugh Howard Housen Foundation is a Portland based non-profit that is dedicated to creating awareness and providing much needed support for young adults with cancer. The HHH Foundation started  in 2005. The Foundation is named after Hugh Housen, who lost his battle with cancer at the age of 25. Hugh grew up and was educated in Eugene, where he graduated with a bachelor’s degree from the Charles Lundquist College of Business at the University of Oregon. Hugh was being treated for cancer all throughout his time at University of Oregon. He never let his condition get in the way of accomplishing his goals. His legacy continues on through the work being done at HHH Foundation.

Providing support and awareness to young adults with cancer only scratches the surface of some of the great work that the Hugh Howard Housen Foundation is doing. They donate backpacks filled with goodies for OHSU’s Adolescent and Young Adult Program in Portland twice a year. The HHH Foundation also holds annual cancer awareness events.

Coming up on November 11th they are presenting the Notes of Hope fundraising concert. Notes of Hope will take place at the Alberta Rose Theatre and proceeds will go to the Adolescents and Young Adults Program at OHSU. The concert will be a night showcasing great music from local talents and live storytelling from AYAs.
