Sunday, August 20 MEW, MONAKR and The Skeleton Keys at Hawthorne Theatre

Mew: Visuals- North America 2017 Tour
w/ special guest MONAKR and The Skeleton Keys

From the Facebook event page: “Bjerre doesn’t know where Mew songs come from. He finds it hard to pin down his lyrics, his melodies, himself. It’s what makes the band so special, that thrill that songs could go anywhere, that understated verses could suddenly rocket skyward, anthemic choruses could implode into beautiful soundscapes or sophisticated grooves could be crushed like a tincan. ‘I don’t consciously know why the songs come out the way they do,’ says Bjerre. ‘Even though a song is on an album, it keeps growing because we get to go out and perform it for an audience, and through people who listen, we get to experience the music in an ever different light. I like the thought it can keep growing. It’s never really finished.'”

Teri’s Picks:

Saturday, August 19 The Druthers at 3Peaks Public House & Taproom

If you’re not heading out of town this weekend like many of us, there’s a great place about a 30 minute drive north of Portland where you can see a fantastic band in the outdoors. The band is The Druthers, a group of friends who love to spend time together and genuinely enjoy playing music together. It’s this affection, and their terrific music of course, that draws their fans to them like glue. Our one request, that they play more shows so we can see them more often! They’ll perform in the beautiful outdoor space of 3Peaks Public House and Taproom in Ridgefield, WA. There is plenty of room for the kids to run, with games and outbuildings for them to play in so pack the family, some chairs, and a blanket for an enjoyable early evening of music.

Check out The Druthers on Portland Radio Project!

I was fortunate to have seen Melissa Etheridge last week at the Clark County Fairgrounds along with several hundred of her fans. If you missed that show, do not despair because you can get a local dose of Etheridge tunes at Hot August Nights: A Melissa Etheridge Tribute with Sonny Hess. Last year’s tribute show was such a success that Sonny Hess is bringing it back again, Saturday, August 19, at McMenamins Mission Theater, 7 p.m. doors, 8 p.m. show. With this talented lineup, you know it’s going to be a great show: LaRhonda Steele, Ward Griffiths, Lisa Mann, Leah Hinchcliff, Kathryn Grimm, and Nayibe Rojas. Don’t wait too long to get your ticket because it will likely sell out.

Jody Carroll McMurrian, you may know him as Joe McMurrian, performs and creates Modern American Roots Blues music. Formerly from Portland, he currently splits his time on the East Coast between Charleston, South Carolina and Asheville, North Carolina. Portland is lucky because he will be here for a couple of weeks as part of his Northwest Tour and CD Release. After you have watched Monday’s eclipse, you can spend a nice evening on the Lake at Lake Theater & Cafe for Joe’s double release party of “Back to the Country” (CD), and “Live from the Asheville Guitar Bar” (Download).

“Joe’s performances are a sight to behold as he effortlessly creates modern interpretations of old Blues masters, his own amazing songs and stories or improvisational musical journeys. It’s like watching a Robert Johnson or Son House of old if they had been influenced by everything that came after them.” He is a “Finger style/slide guitar master and amazingly soulful singer like no other. His ability to freeform in the moment to create constant new renditions of traditional songs and original material set’s him far apart from others. He blends flavors of old country Blues, Folk, Hill Country music, Jazz and Rock all together into a true American gumbo.”
