Rock Block was proud to host another mogo Portland Music Festival participant this week. Mogo is devoted to bringing the Portland music community together by producing a festival featuring the very best local artists across many different genres, ranging from hip-hop and singer/songwriters to hard rock and metal. Tyranny of Hours is mogo’s choice for prog rock and melodic or symphonic metal.

Tyranny of Hours consists of 4 members, each so amazingly skilled on their own! Don composes the intricate instrumentation from a large-scale symphonic perspective. The sound is very full, so he has to be looking at the big picture when writing. Meanwhile, Michelle creates delicate yet powerful vocal melodies and lyrics. She delivers them in the most haunting way – her voice is most definitely an instrument to be admired!

Tyranny of Hours has the clean, precise, and timeless approach to music. Drawing inspiration from early Prog Rock bands like Genesis, Rush, Yes, and Dream Theater, Tyranny of Hours creates a wall of sound! The layers of complex music up against the soaring vocals create an atmosphere that surrounds you and takes you for a ride. This band isn’t afraid of the long guitar solo or time changes, they are a true Prog Rock band

Being the only “metal” or “prog rock” band in the mogo festival is a big responsibility, but this band is very enthusiastic about the opportunity to represent. Michelle and I reminisced about the days when we could go to a festival or turn on the radio and hear a sample of all genres of current music. Many local musicians are wanting to break down walls between these genres, to overcome segmentation, and unite the Portland music scene.

Great interview of a great up and coming band !!!
I learned of this wonderful band 3+ years ago while looking for music for my radio show.. with just one listen to their single Amber I knew I had stumbled across something very special that stood out because of it’s style and the way in which it was presented !!
I met up with Michelle and Don at a concert a few months later finding them to be some of the nicest , down to earth people I had met in all my years of being involved in music! It was this show that they met Never Awake (another younger very talented progressive band) and is why now Matt and Alex are in TOH …This band just keeps making the right moves and always is moving forward in positive ways!
As a fan and friend of this band I thank you all for helping make this band better known .. Fusion and Prog music are the highest mountian of musicial acceptability to climb..with a smaller fan base than most music!
Tyranny Of Hours to me…is thee Real Deal … there’s nothing like them here in Portland … Kudo’s to PRP, for supporting the underdogs of music .
