At PRP, we love our local musicians – especially when they join us and play live in the studio. We are completely honored when they share new music with us on the Rock Block. We are impressed when we hear about their writing process and the inspirations behind what they do. This week, Brian Harrison and his band The Last Draw gave us their very best – and we are grateful!

The Last Draw is what Brian calls his “last breath.” He’s been in the music industry for probably longer than most musicians would like to admit. He’s worked in several different genres, going with the flow of the times and adapting to what audiences were asking for, as musicians often do. Somewhere along the way though, Brian found this perfect connection with bluegrass and Americana style music – he immersed himself in the styles, from their origins to the current state of the genre. He began gathering talent from friends and family members, and created some amazing music. The Last Draw is where Brian wants to put the entire bank of his musical energy. It looks to be a good investment.

Brian is working on a project with The Last Draw that I found to be unique – I honestly do not think that I have heard of anyone doing this before. He is writing a fictional, but historically based novel and writing a series of songs that accompany and bring another aspect of understanding for the reader and audience. The songs he played for us are in the podcast below – Brian is indeed a storyteller, and adding the music brings such emotion and connection to the story!

The Last Draw was so kind to bring in all their gear to play a concert for us in our tiny studio. The drums were outside, the violinist had to stand sideways, and the bass player had to sit on his amplifier – but they made it work! The resulting concert was enthralling, both in the studio and on air. Please check it out below! This group, with the current lineup is brand new, having only played one show together. Their next performance will be at the mogo Portland Music Festival on November 20 and 21. We hope to see you there!
