If you are looking for a fun holiday show that also happens to benefit children, you can find it at Wonder Ballroom Saturday night. It is the 4th Annual “Stumptown Soul Holiday Spectacular – 2017,” a benefit concert and toy drive for patients of Shriners Hospitals for Children – Portland. What began over a shared love of holiday music and a desire to spread joy to children in the hospital has grown since its inception four years ago at Mississippi Pizza. Performances cross a wide range of styles from soul to gospel, pop, Hawaiian, rhythm & blues, rockabilly, folk, original songs, as well as traditional holiday classics. The all-star cast features some of the Northwest’s most prolific musicians:
Ural Thomas (Ural Thomas and the Pain), Steve Kerin (Too Loose Cajun Band, Rose City Kings, Atomic Gumbo), LaRhonda Steele (LaRhonda Steele Band, Karen Lovely (Karen Lovely Band), Dan Berkery (Rose City Kings), Michael Quinby (Roseland Hunters, Thunder Brothers)
Jennifer Smieja (Jennifer Smieja Band, Too Loose Cajun Band, Jamie Short Stories), Kris Deelane (KD & the Hurt), Katy Oberg (Rose City Kings),
Jim Brunberg (Wonderly, Box Set), Aundria Lauren, and Jim Quinby.

The all-star back up band includes:
Peter Dammann (guitar, Paul deLay, Karen Lovely, Too Loose Cajun/Zydeco Band), Mark Bowden (guitar, KD & The Hurt), Gary Keeney (drums, Rose City Kings), Tim Shaughnessy (bass, Too Loose Cajun Band, Rose City Kings), Robert Lefty Head (fiddle, Too Loose Cajun Band), Paul Brainard (trumpet, numerous bands), Pete Moss (sax, KD & the Hurt), Dylan Rieck (cellist, Portland Opera, numerous bands), Hershel Yatovitz (guitar, Chris Isaak), Alan Spinrad (MC, Klickitat Basement Band, Guitar Tuesday).

Proceeds from the performance will benefit Shriners Hospitals for Children – Portland, whose 90-plus-year mission is to provide care to children with orthopedic issues, regardless of a patient’s ability to pay. The Portland hospital has been instrumental in helping children defy the odds of disability, as well as pioneering education and research to improve lives for generations.

Last December, the band paid a visit to The Portland Playlist at Portland Radio Project. As I did last year, I went to their rehearsals to do a little Facebook Live video #1, #2, #3, #4, #5.
