Marathon mediation over the weekend produced no movement in the labor dispute at Portland Public Schools. The next move is a union strike vote, set for Wednesday. Teachers could walkout ten days later, if they authorize a strike. But another round of mediation is planned for February 9th, a last-ditch opportunity to avoid the dissension, confusion, and bitterness that could come with a strike. Mayor Hales told KGW he will not get involved in negotiations, but said he has contacted both sides to talk about how harmful a strike would be to all of Portland.
