A Salem high school teacher is being honored this week as the best in Oregon at teaching an embattled topic: civics. You know: what it means to be an active citizen in a democracy. The Classroom Law Project, which supports civics education (social studies), will confer the honor on Drew Moneke Friday, Dec. 6, at its annual conference. Moneke teaches Advanced Placement U.S. history, government and world geography at West Salem High School. The group says teaching social studies often takes a back seat because of mandatory testing in reading, math and science.
