Thursday, August 30 Cat-Chella: The Prids, Arctic Flowers, Vibrissae, Darkswoon at Holocene Portland

Cat-chella is the brainchild of a group of local musicians, volunteers, and animal lovers. Our mission is to support local animal welfare non-profits by increasing their visibility, raising awareness about their work, and fundraising on their behalf through live musical performance. Cat-chella was conceived as a concert series, supporting a different animal welfare beneficiary each time. We are proud to bring our second installment to Holocene, with all proceeds going to Portland Animal Welfare Team – PAW Team!
As the Merc reports, “Please note: No actual felines will be in attendance.”

WEDNESDAY

Wednesday, September 5 Korgy & Bass, Dandu, Human Ottoman at Goodfoot Pub & Lounge

Human Ottoman is a power trio of electric cello, vibraphone and drums from Portland. Susan Lucia (drums) and Grayson Fiske (vibraphone) started the project in 2013. Human Ottoman has created a repertoire of raucous, rhythmically dynamic music that combines their enthusiasm for the music of all cultures with modern genre-mashing sensibilities, characterized most of all by their unique instrumentation. From brain-crashing cello solos and atomic vibraphone drops to drum solos that scholars are still struggling to understand, Human Ottoman is bringing polyrhythmic rock to the masses.

Korgy & Bass, comprised of drummer/composer Barra Brown and bassist/beatmaker Alex Meltzer, is an expertly crafted blend of deep hip hop cuts, jazz experimentalism and forward thinking composition. Using limited instrumentation and a free-flowing approach to performance, the duo drops massive grooves that harken back to hip hop’s Golden Era while simultaneously paving a way for future sounds. The result is a sophisticated palette of digital and analogue textures which allows Korgy & Bass to reverse engineer classic instrumental hip hop vibes in real time.

Wednesday, September 6 SassyBlack, Blossom, DNVN (Jane Smith Solo Set), VNPRT at Holocene

Join us for a night with Seattle’s psychedelic electronic soul songstress SassyBlack!
SassyBlack is a psychedelic electronic soul songstress & producer from Seattle, Washington. She has been traveling the world singing and DJing since 2008. With a foundation in jazz, her energy is unlike any other, providing a deep unique concert experience.
“SassyBlack, aka Catherine Harris-White is the afrofuturist, sci-fi loving R&B singer we, the people, need. And thank goodness she’s back with a jazzy new second solo album, New Black Swing.”
– AfroPunk
“If you find it difficult to categorize SassyBlack’s music, that means she’s doing it right.” – NYLON

Blossom has recently been fulfilling her namesake – with roots in Trinidad & Tobago – she has bloomed in the Pacific Northwest’s music scene.
Born into a musically inclined family, she embraced the stage naturally at the age of 12. For many years she performed alongside her uncle with his traveling steel drum band. Upon moving to Portland, she has developed the identity of a unique songstress. Her first serious moments of vocal talent were as a backup singer for an R&B artist in 2011 which led her to write songs of her own. Blossom’s jazzy neo-soul inspired voice and meaningful lyrics have found her in the favor of Portland’s underground hip-hop scene.

DNVN is a collaboration started by Donovan Edwards (Jane Smith) & Damon Boucher (Chanti Darling, Du Og Meg)
Influenced by past but sounds like future.
Sounds like: future r&b with a little bit of funk.
Feels like: lush sex jams set in space.
Taste like: last night’s sweet tea on your morning walk home.
Smells like: tobacco, leather bootstraps and daddy’s aftershave.
