Nastacia’s pick:

Sunday, April 1 SassyBlack, The Seshen at Doug Fir Lounge

This is cool: We have a psychedelic/electronic pop storm brewing at the Dough Fir Lounge this Sunday, April 1 with San Francisco six-piece The Sheshen co-headlining with Seattle-based vocalist SassyBlack for a unique alchemy of sound. Both acts are rising stars with very “here-and-now” sounds, guaranteeing a funky night of terrific fusion music. We’re lucky to have both groups crossing paths and sharing a stage, especially with general admission tickets sitting at $12.

Inessa’s picks:

Thursday, March 29 Astro Tan, Spooky Mansion, Le Grotto

Astro Tan originally formed as a prison/prom band at Charles Bukowski High School, Astro Tan spent years playing soul clubs on the ghost town circuit. They’ve also worked as the house act in the lounge of a derelict Japanese cruise ship, playing for forgotten Hollywood stars under a slowly turning disco ball since the late 70’s. Moreover, Astro Tan is a three-piece R&B band from Portland, Oregon.

Spooky Mansion started as a one-off performance when they were asked to play for Owen Wilson’s 45th birthday on the shore of the Mississippi River in North Texas. After a bootleg recording of the event was passed around in early 2015, a cult following began growing and the band eventually decided to pursue music full time in San Francisco.

Monday, April 2 Gaelynn Lea, Jenny Conlee Duo at White Eagle

Classically trained violinist and songwriter Gaelynn Lea has been bewitching scores of fans with her experimental and ambient takes on fiddle music, an approach that incorporates her love of traditional tunes, songwriting, poetry and sonic exploration. Her work most recently won NPR Music’s 2016 Tiny Desk Contest, (VIDEO,) a competition drawing submissions of original songs from more than 6,000 musicians across the country. Gaelynn Lea has been playing violin for over twenty years, developing an improvisational style all her own. In addition to performing, Gaelynn also loves to do speaking engagements about disability, overcoming challenges, and the joy of music. She has a congenital disability called Osteogenesis Imperfecta, or Brittle Bones Disease. Gaelynn is a strong voice in the disability community; she uses her music as a platform to advocate for people with disabilities and to promote positive social change.

Jenny Conlee is a pianist, organist, and accordionist who performs and records with The Decemberists along with many other Portland bands. Jenny will be performing accordion music from the instrumental album “French Kayaking Music” that she and husband Steve Drizos wrote for the film “Voyagers Without Trace”. A documentary about 3 french explorers discovering the west, directed by Ian McCluskey and produced by NW Documentary.
