Salem is sitting in for 1880s New York State in a new independent film. “10 Days in the Madhouse” will begin shooting at locations around town in the next couple of weeks. The movie tells the real life story of journalist Nelly Bly, who went undercover in a women’s insane asylum in 1887. Her horrifying account led to reforms in the treatment of the mentally ill. The Statesman Journal reports  shooting locations include the Reed Opera House, the Willamette Heritage Center at the Mill, the Historic Deepwood Estate and the Polk County Courthouse.
